A Tester (or more formally, "Dokimastis") is a position within an Academy that is tasked with seeking out children with the Gift of Magic from outside of Pathi. Due to the nature of the work, which requires extensive travel, such are often those who were themselves selected as children. This works out well for both the Dokimastis and their original homelands—it demonstrates that they were well cared-for, encouraging parents of those selected that it is a good life. It is also a position for which there is usually a strong demand for and few applicants, as most of the Scholi, especially those who are Pathi-born, abhor travel.
Dokimastes are assigned to just about every realm in the Golden Circle. However, this excludes the following:1
- Minos, due to their suspected interest in finding the way to Pathi
- Cibola, due to their search for magics to allow for Shadow travel
- Amber, due to the former official policy of isolation
