For the most part, only influential and powerful individuals use the formal term marriage for their relationship. Marriage in Pathi has little to do with love and everything to do with the continuous survival of the potent bloodlines. A formalized contract sets forth the terms of the marriage, usually covering the number of children the union is required to produce, the Family to whom these children will belong, and the duration of the contract as part of the deal. These contracts are recorded by the Sanctuary and require the signatures of all parties involved.

Generally speaking, most contracts are formed between an established Pathi bloodline and a first generation immigrant (meaning, someone who had been Tested as a child and invited to Pathi). A fewer number go to two who are second generation immigrants, and it quickly falls to zero for any further generations.

The taking of a mate for love may be marked by formal rituals and ceremonies, but it is less common. Marriages to those who are not of Pathi are exceptionally rare and these usually occur when a significant advantage can be gained. Offspring produced with outsiders are tested by the Academies for potential. If they fail, they are generally not initiated into the mysteries of Pathi.
